Danielle A. Scruggs

Danielle A. Scruggs is a Chicago-based visual editor, curator, photographer, and writer. Currently, she is a visuals editor at NPR. She has served as a photo editor at The Wall Street Journal, Getty Images, Vox Media, and ESPN and began her career as a photo desk assistant at The Washington Post.

Her photography clients include The New York Times, AARP, the New Republic, Bon Appétit magazine, People magazine, and ProPublica. She has contributed writing on visual culture and film to Teen Vogue, RogerEbert.com, Ebony, and The Trice.

As the founder of Black Women Directors, Danielle has created a digital archive dedicated to celebrating filmmakers who have historically been marginalized. Since its establishment in 2015, it has become a vital resource for creators and industry professionals, fostering connections and promoting diverse storytelling. BWD has earned two Webby Awards and been highlighted in prominent outlets, including Marie Claire and New York Magazine’s The Cut.

Through her participation in Change Collective, Danielle aims to strengthen her connections with local and national organizations to expand the reach of Black Women Directors beyond a digital platform into more in-person events, such as screenings, panel discussions, and workshops, to continue building community through cinema.
